Question for PE-95 K Gurus

Post by coolpool » Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:40 am

I have a running 1951 PE-95K gen set that I'm in the process of restoring. A couple of things have popped up;

1- once running it won't shut off with the toggle switch. I have to choke it out to stop it. The relay 620.1 seems to move freely?

2. While trying to troubleshoot the no-stopping issue, I rolled the motor over with no gas in it and when I released the toggle it kept rolling over with the toggle in the run position. I had to pull the battery cable off to get it to stop. Now when I try to connect the battery I get severe arcing. Is the motor trying to turn over still? Is something stuck like the starter solenoid?

Thanks in advance for you help!

You realize advice like t his is worth every cent you paird for it.....

Have you checked the start/stop switch for continuity? It sounds like one side (STOP of course) is open. They even sell these switches at home depot and auto-parts stores, and any electronics parts store will have them. (SPDT = Single Pole Double Throw)

It sounds like the starter solenoid is shorted, and the arching is because you're connecting the battery with the starter motor in circuit. Disconnect the solenoid wire and see if it sparks reconnecting the battery. Check continuity across the relay contacts of the starter solenoid, and if closed, replace it. Any 12V unit will work, just go to the auto parts store.

Good luck.

Update. The arcing has stopped when I connect the battery cables once I removed the top cap from the solenoid, depressed the pin and manually reset it; or I think that did it? Either way it's behaving normal again. After sorting out my fuel leaks and running it for a bit I see that the toggle is activating the stop relay but it's not grounding out the magneto. Once I sort that out I should be able to stop this thing without choking it out all the time.
