It's pretty much done.....

Post by standardtwin » Thu Jan 28, 2016 3:08 pm

After over a year of plugging away, the 1945 PE-95 is pretty much done.

I made a video of it running in a completed form at 1800rpm today. It sounds good, and generates fine.

I did notice that I have the amp guage wired backwards. These are PE95K electric guages in the control panel, and I had to figure out how to adapt them. I did not want an oil hose going through the electrics like the original did.

The temp guage is working wrong too, as the sending unit is new and is supposed to be 12 volts. I removed the resistor so it sees 12V. THe oil guage works fine on 12V.

This unit got:
New rings
4 new exhaust valves
All new gaskets
NOS brushes and NOS brush springs
Fixed all the solenoids in control panel
New oil and temp sending units
New reproduction battery cables
New carb kit
New oil hoses
New belts
New rad hoses
Tin work fixed and painted in correct OD.

A special thank you to Adam for supplying some of the original replacement parts I needed !! Could not have done it without you.

Outstanding job standardtwin!

So many of these are broken up for the engine and such it's very cool to see one restored. Thanks for posting the video. And some critter always has to make its home in one of these, don't they... :)

Excellent job standardtwin! Thanks for creating and posting the video summarizing your restoration and showing the end results. Very impressive! Are you going to leave it on the axle or lower it onto it's skids?

Thanks for the kind words

I cut the old axle off and got rid of the pipe and other garbage that was welded to it too. It has 700lB industrial casters welded to the skid now, and it makes it very easy to roll around the garage. Easy to store out of the way too.

I have the air filter on now, and fixed the backwards amp guage setup. I found that the govenor was stuck, so took it off and freed it up. It works properly now. In doing so broke a throttle ball joint at gov end, so waiting for another one to come in. I don't seem to have 12 volts at the output terminals, so will chase that down.

I need to finish the covers for it. I have all of it, but sanding and painting are in order....I know that many of these become MB engine transplants, but I made a promise to the previous owner that I would not do that. Not only is this history, but a great house backup unit too. (although thirsty)

Very impressive restoration and video presentation, Mike!
A few minor issues and you will be golden.
So, I don't see where you have put it under a load? I never bought a PE-95 because of California regulations but I use to test my portable standby generator

Yes, a load test will be in order. As the throttle ball joint broke, I have to wait until I fix that to run it again.

I used to run my house with the PE-197 6.25KW genset. THis one is 10KW, and will easily do it without breaking a sweat.
