Is this a welder/gen engine?
Last summer I picked up this engine to replace the Pinto engine in my 1943 GPW.
The previous owner said it was rebuilt, & appears to be.
I do not know anything about the various years of engines nor what they were put into.
Since it had a T-90 & T/C attached to it, I assumed that it was from a jeep.
This winter I dug it out & noticed that the front engine mounts were strange.
Was this out of a welder/generator?
Will it work in my GPW?
I ask this as I don't know if the engines for stationary applications were de-tuned.
IE: smaller valves, intake passages, lower compression?
I have a "F" script front engine plate that looks like (externaly) it will fit to replace the "flat foot" plate on it.
I have searched this on here, but have only found that the block casting numbers are late model.
What about the numbers on the head?
Here are some pics of the numbers and oddities;
Front engine mount "feet"
M38 style coolant outlets on head & water pump? Or did all late model L134's have this?
Casting numbers on head.
800376
Casting numbers on block.
908756
I know by this number that it is a late L134.
Right side:
Left side:
No block serial number on side, but there is one by water pump.
RJ307340
No lower frost plugs
Intake & Exhaust Port sizes
Block
Intake 1.40"
Exhaust 1.25"
Intake Manifold
Intake 1.23"
Exhaust 1.26"
Exhaust manifold numbers
Bell housing inspection cover & casting number.
802929?
Alternator
Carberator
Carter W-O
No Patent Numbers
Choke Plate 1.66"
Throttle Plate 1.19"
Thanks Kevin

Re: Is this a welder/gen engine?
It is definitely not a front plate with a vehicle mounting pattern. Tour engine appears to be from the 50's 60's, Hobare, Lincoln, and Libby all used the L-134 to power portable welders, I have experience with the Hobarts, the front plate does not appear to be Hobart or PE-95, but possibly Lincoln or Libby.

I think the R meant it was a replacement engine. It went wherever it was needed.

And note the evidence of a data plate beneath the distributor. Typical of a Jeep industrial engine.

Re: Is this a welder/gen engine?
Thanks for replies, but,,,,,
What I need to know is is this an industrial engine that will not be any good in my GPW or ????????
If its a welder/gen , 1800 RPM Max, then I will keep my Pinto engine as I don't have the $$ to find another enigine.
Thanks Kevin

Ok, now see the rivit head under the dist. from a plate.
I just don't know enough about these engines to make a plan!

I know the block can be used and very faulty memory but you may have to get a different carb and head. Also a different manifold but don't know if is intake or exhaust manifold or both. It will certainly go over 1800 rpm. Front mounting plate will have to be changed.

Re: Is this a welder/gen engine?
These are standard Jeep blocks with standard Jeep engine internal parts, they are altered for industrial use with non Jeep front mounting plates except for the PE-95. Some do have rotating valves which is a plus. With the correct front mounting plate and manifolding they can be configured back to Jeep use.
The most difficult part of reconfiguring to the Jeep Chassis is to install the exact front mounting plate, as there are several that will look the same to a novice. The CJ-2A has two options , chain, non Chain. CJ-3A has two options, depending on early/late chassis and fuel pump. The MB/GPW have one option unless a later gear type cam engine is being installed. Early CJ-2A and CJ-3A front plates can be installed in MB/GPW but require addition of the stud for the spring on the generator brace. The M-38/M-38A1 plate appear identical to late CH-3A, but the mounting hole for the generator bushing is wrong.
Getting back to the difficult part is that the Timing Gear may get ruined during the front plate changeover due to incompatibility of pullers and one must not reinstall the fibre camshaft gear(timing gear) by driving it on as it will displace the expansion plug at the rear of the block causing more problems.
I probably have examples of every front plate used on Jeep powerplant application but do not have the time to sort them all out to provide pics of. There are some industrial plates that appear to be exact until installation is attempted they are from Hobart Welders.
Also to be considered are the teeth on the ring gear and the rear adaptor plate configuration that depends on the type starter.
Been there done this for 6 decades,it requires time and patience, correct tools and parts. There may be frustration with finding the correct front mounting plate and you may have to endure being sent a few wrong ones.

You may want to check the threads on the crankshaft, the nut is not the standard pulley nut.

Re: Is this a welder/gen engine?
Thanks guys, It already has a bell housing , T-90 & T/C mounted to it, but don't know if they will work.
I don't know the fly wheel tooth count but it measures .75" from the bottom of the ring gear tooth to the bottom of the ring gear.
I have a GPW front engine plate, will it fit???
Can anyone confirm these measurements with a vehicle engine?
Block
Casting #908756
Serial # RJ307340
Intake 1.40”
Exhaust 1.25”
Intake Manifold
Casting number 837205
Intake 1.23”
Exhaust 1.26”
Carter Model W-O
Choke Plate 1.66”
Throttle Plate 1.19”

Re: Is this a welder/gen engine?
It will be best to find a CJ-2A/Early CJ-3A Front plate for a gear type engine, as the GPW Front engine plate is not configured for the OIL Jet and late camshaft hardware.if you retain the T-84, the T-90 Bellhousing and is not configured for the 2nd/3rd T-84 shift rail.
