I decided to send some photos of mine with the head off. You can see that #2 and #3 are blocked off. I do not know what the cam looks like. I can take more photos if needed, but it might take a while.

Do you have a picture of inside the side valve cover? I opened one up years ago. The 4 lifters that ride on the cam were in there, hose clamps held them up. The little adjusters that go on the lifters, or tappets or whatever were out. The 4 valves were still in the engine.

Someplace I read, maybe in the owners manual, the engines were off the shelf Willys engines.
Anybody have a engine part list for the Hessee? what does that show?

are the valves in the block that you have pictured or are they some kind of plug? If this was a special engine block why would they mill the block for the valves in cyls 2 and 3?

Mine has 908756 block and seems to be right off the shelf, except the 4 valves were removed, hose clamps added to the 4 lifters and bolts put into the valves guides. I thought maybe the bolts were there because somebody switched blocks at some point BUT the bolts match the assembly bolts used on the rest of the setup. I also have a double rear plate to give the starter more support, but I plan to beef that up some more. Mine does not have these nice plugs in the valve holes, so it seems they made changes over time.

I may decide to get it from you since I already have the head, but then the frame tank & control valves become any issue.

Does anyone out there have an extra head gasket for a Hesse Hornet? I have mine apart right now and have all parts but the correct head gasket. My old gasket was blown between #1 and 2 cylinders. If no correct gasket, will have to try a standard CVJ3 head gasket or have one custom made.

Northwest might have one left, but I saw they had one with a bare head on an auction site a few months ago.

Called them a month ago. None left and no suggestions on where to find one. Missed the one on Ebay or would have bought it. Why does the regular head gasket fail to work? I realize the shape is different. Does it blow out? I would think it would hold up and my valve ports are plugged. No compression should be lost. Any thoughts on this?

With plugged ports it MAY actually work. I bought the correct gasket befor ehe ran out, but am concerned about future work on this unit.

Hopefully it all goes back together in the next couple of days. Am using a type of anerobic liquid sealer for the top air manifold to head surfaces after assembly of the engine. It needs to cure for minimum 24 hours after application. Am very interested if this will hold up at the head to air manifold. Supposed to hold high pressure and up to 700 degrees. If not, its easy removal and either special O rings or gasket fabrication for these two surfaces. I would have no idea where to find those gaskets either. Will keep you posted. I have some sandblasting to do on a CJ5 frame when the compressor gets finished. Its a tool for me, not a collectors item ( YET )

The last Compressor I bought has a head gasket on it from a regular engine. PO said he had to fasten the plugs or valves into the block. The stock gasket for the compressor has material in this area where I guess the machined surface of the head and gasket hold the plugs in place.
Can you verify that the valves or plugs just dont pop out? What holds them in place?

The plugs look much like freeze plugs for a block. They are in very tight. I tapped on them with a hammer and punch. Nothing moved.

Yes, I will take pictures next week. I keep thinking I will get it put together but something keeps coming up. Well ,if I wait long enough someone may offer up a correct head gasket.
