M-100 to M-38
I have purchased a 1951 m-100 to go with my 1951 m-38. The safety chains on the trailer are original, but when I try to attach them to the jeep, there is nothing there to attach to. Any ideas how and where the chains attach to the jeep. Thanks, Chuck

I always thought the chains hooked to the two rear lifting shackles, but my M-100 does not have the chains.
Here's a link to TM 9-2330-201-14 that you might find handy, found, of all places, on the Toyota Landcruser page!

m-100
Thanks to all who have responded this post. My m-100 trailer does not have chains long enough to reach the lifting shackles. They have only 11 links in them. It looks like they should hook around the pintle hook some how. I have a m-416 trailer that has the longer hooks, but did not know if they were the same as the m-100. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,
If the chains don't reach they are probably the early original chains. If you're not concerned with resto points then you have two more choices. 1-Add the WWII jeep lower pintle eyebolts 2-Add the flat adapter plate from the M151 that fits between the pintle and the frame and has two ears sticking out at an angle with holes for the chain.

M100
Thanks to all of you who have responded to my post. I would like to go with I-bolts like on the earlier jeeps. Does anyone have any idea where I can get these? Thanks, Chuck

I would suggest getting some cast Eye bolts from the hardware store of the proper size and heating them with a torch and bending your own... Unless a vendor carries them... You might try Ron here at the G503...
Hope this helps...

m-100
I am most interested in putting it back the way it was when the m-100 came out with these shorter chains. This is a 1951 model trailer, so I thought the m-38 had a way to connect the shorter chains. Anybody have an early m-38 that might share a picture using the shorter chains? Thanks, Chuck

That's a fairly common Canadian setup. Even the short chained WWII MBT and T-3 trailers often ended up with the longer 1 ton trailer chains. Obviously in 1950 the Willys pintle engineer never had any contact with the Dunbar Kappel safety chain engineer. So the Army said WHOA either give us the pintle chain eyes or gives us longer chains. They got longer chains. If you want what most likely was on that first few months of production M100's I'd bet they where standard stock chains that the WWII MBT and T3 already had.
As for the parts books the 52 and 72 M100 parts lists show only the 7328317 Dubar Kappel chain. So sometime during the early production period (1950/51) the change must have occurred and the shorter chain never got listed. You can't trust the illustrations in the 52 and 72 M100 parts list because the Army used a lot of existing illustrations from the WWII trailer. So when you count links in the chains you get 11 links for the MBT, T3, and M100. The M100 manuals still show the 3 position landing leg that was not used on the M100 but the illustartion came right out of the WWII trailer parts manual.
Even in this illustration we see the WWII jeep posing with the M100 chained to it. Again with 11 link chains. This is TM 9-871A M100 Ops Manual dated July 1951.

MY CAN AM SAFETY SET UP
This is how the Canadian Army secured the M-100 Trailer Safety Chains to the M-38A1 CDN. (Note the late Pintle Hook with the Safety Pin)
The M-100 used the same Safety Chain and Hooks as the MBT/BT3. The Canadians came up with a way to attach the M-100 Safety Chains while the US Army had a bulletin to cut off the Safety Chains at the Wedges.
Note that I have an M-151 Pintle Hook with the Safety Pin. It is in the interest of safety.

You can find it in the ORD 9 Group 1503 under Pintle, towing, less lock and latch.
