Data Plate Restoration or Reproduction

Post by Austringer » Tue Feb 13, 2018 5:56 pm

Is there anyone that can restore or copy dataplates that I have on a vehicle? This is not a M38A1, but figured this would be the best place to ask. I have all the original plates, some are acid etched, some are silk screened but most are looking pretty rough. The ones I'm missing, I have the dimensions and what they are supposed to look like from the manual.

Thanks for the help.

What vehicle is it?
Restoring them consists of cleaning, painting, and very lightly sanding them to make the letters stand out. If they are cheap repros, or have already been sanded flat, then the letters will not come back.
There are excellent data plate makers in Poland (Lt Horne), and Holland. Look in the MB forum, here on G503 and you will see links to them.

https://rdrnl.home.xs4all.nl/dataplates.htm Robert de Ruyter in The Netherlands. He also has a stamping service if needed.

FWIW . . .
I checked with Robert de Ruyter in November (2017) to see if he could restore my plates but he doesn't do restorations.

However, I had other options so I had him do a new Serial Plate with my serial number, inspectors stamps and letters in addition to a new Patent Plate with the correct stamping. Excellent work, included necessary rivets and it looks great.

It's actually for a M56 Scorpion I'm restoring, I figured this board is one of the more active and the data plates on the M38/38A1 are similar (with the raised letters and black background) to the data plates on the M56. I have scale pictures of each, the serial number plate is aluminum and pretty much can't read anything but the serial number on it due to weathering etc. the other plates are either missing or can't read at all.
