It has just come to my attention that many M38A1's have a vent tube from the valve cover to the oil fill tube. I do not have this on my 67 CDN2....what was this for and can the lack of this vent tube cause high oil consumption?
Thanks in advance,
les

Re: Info Required! Valve Cover Vent
Non Vented Cover does show in parts lists but the Serial number for the change over is not listed. The Willys Drawing for that Part Number should note the change over. It has to do with the routing of the crankcase ventilation.
That same change took place prior to 1960 in the CJ-5. Oil Consumption? Why would the factory want to do that?

My Nos engine in crate is dated 1962 and the valve cover vent had been deleted prior to 62 in US M38A1’s

Re: Info Required! Valve Cover Vent
Hi Ben,
Just learning about my 67' M38A1 and I have many questions...
Thanks for your reply....the only possible vent that I have is a rubber hose from the upper fording valve to the oil filler tube (what is this for?)and from the side valve cover to the lower fording valve & PCV....is this engine venting?
I am inquiring about venting as I burn about a quart of 15w-40 in about 300-400 miles and I know that a blocked vent (PCV valve) may cause this....I have no visible leaks, the compression & oil control rings were changed about a thousand miles ago, I have cleaned the PCV valve and the fording valve is open, no blue or black smoke anytime, plugs show no fouling, no malted milk oil on dipstick & cover and no oil in rad fluid.....where is it going?
Also, is it hard to take off the crank pulley (67' M38A1 CDN2) and replace the seal and cover gasket. Is there any surprises or difficulties to look for...any special tools required?
Thanks for your pics Zane....but I was not able to get them as apparently I cannot open third party pics and I do not know why....any other way to see those pics.
Best regards to both...
