Points & Condensor

Post by lesk » Wed Sep 27, 2017 7:26 pm

Is it easy to replace points & condenser on a 67' M38A1 CDN2 (original 24 volt) for a novice to moderate vehicle wrencher? Also, I have heard that some pad has to be lubed under the distributor cap....can anyone send pics as to what has to be lubed? Any issues to replacing the cap & rotor?....will anything (timing etc) be disturbed with the change?

Regards,

lk

Hi lk,

It's not that hard. Just opening the distributor and replacing the points and condenser will not change the advance of the timing but it will change the gap of the points. You will have to get a .020 feeler gauge and set the gap. There should be two screws that hold the points down to the plate inside the distributor. One screw is like a pivot and the other in a slot of the points. You loosen them and then put a screwdriver in a small notch on the side of the points to move the contacts farther away and closer until when you put the feeler gauge in the gap it fits with a slight drag. Then tighten it back down and check it again to make sure it did not move. The condenser is just remove the tiny screw without dropping it and mount the new one.

Normally a good set of points will come with some lube. You put that lube on the rotating part of the shaft.

If you pull the rotor button off and look at the end of the shaft that is where the felt is for adding the oil to lube the distributor.

Thanks Jeep4Brains....a clear and concise answer to the question. Ok, I will put lube onto the felt pad under the rotor and try to find the hinge pivots/weights as well.

Thanks again,

lk

Here is a good read if you are interested. I know its not for a Jeep but the same principles apply.

Just check, double check, and double double check. But not a tough job to do on your jeep.
