paint question

Post by Buzzerdbait » Mon Sep 25, 2017 3:09 pm

Im concerned i used the wrong paint on my M38-A1 the can says G 503 24087 Semi gloss olive drab enamel- quick dry Korean and Vietnam war M series My concern is if i get a fuel spill anywhere it destroys the paint. I had my carb and engine painted and the carb overflowed and ruined the paint.

M-38 and M-38A1 left the factory in 2430 SG OD. Majority of repaints from 50's-70's were SG 24087.

What brand did you use? I use Gillespie; you used the right shade for a rebuild M38A1, as stated above. Spilling gas on an engine is not helpful and the paint is not made for that. Did you perfectly de grease the engine before painting? It will stay on sheet metal. You do not have a problem. I just painted an M38 engine with 23070, (the same color as original M38s and A1s, like 2430) but the engine was perfectly clean during rebuild.

I use GI 24087 Rust Inhibiting SG OD. It has Red Oxide Primer as one ingredient. If applied correctly, it has a look that the civvie 24087 does not have.
GI issue is about extinct. The GI 24087 averages 7-8 Years before it gets too faded.. Following Manufacturers advice on thinner choice makes a difference.

About extinct? How about dodo, extinct.
Yes, you must thin correctly; one to 4 of Xylene. Anything else is a risk.

I have not seen many M-38/M-38A1 era restorations that have duplicated the fresh appearance of GI Spec Rust Inhibiting 24087. The Factory 24087 on M-151 was even a bit different. My sources were GI Surplus by Atlas or by Chemray. I also bought Chemray from the factory as I was a dealer at the time.

Since 99.999 percent of the earth's population never saw a freshly painted M38, I think we are pretty safe in using currently produced paint and calling it correct. Especially since original 1952 paint is all dried up decades ago.
As for the paint that the OP bought, that is sold by Ron, here. I do not know anything about it.
