Conquering the M38A1 lean

Post by CT Trooper » Mon Apr 24, 2017 5:48 am

I know others have discussed this topic. I have the original 12 leaf front and 13 leaf springs on the rear. The left front is 1 1/4 inches lower than the RF and the left rear is 2 1/2 inches lower than the RR. I am considering bringing the vehicle to a local company that specializes in re-arching leaf springs or option two, purchasing a set of new replacement springs from a Military Vehicle Parts Dealer. The replacement springs have fewer leafs. Option 3, bringing the vehicle to a lift specialist for Jeeps and having spacers installed to level the M38A1. My 1954 Jeep is a fully restored vehicle, complete with an original Ramsey Winch, no rust or rot, all replacement parts were NOS. What is the consensus? Thank you!

Only positive cure has been to install NOS Matched sets of springs. Have had poor luck with the aftermarket replacement springs of the past 35 years. Best aftermarket way back when were by MOOG.
It's not always the radios or fuel tanks that cause lean. The frame can be sprung.

You can also switch springs on one side to the other which will tend to even the sag over time. On my M38A1 I have a heavy VRC10 radio that I moved from the left rear fender to the right - no more lean.

Replies appreciated from those that have been there! It's a great Jeep, but the lean takes away from my satisfaction.

I have bought and sold the "reproductions offered over the past 25 years and "Jeep Lean can occur with these even if you buy a pair. OEM is the best way to go and they are hard to find. Do not be bashful if you find NOS from M-170 with less leaves. You will be happier.

I may have to do that with mine. I also have an AM/598 on the passengers side. They may need to trade places!
