YS Pricing Help Needed

Post by w30bob » Tue Apr 04, 2017 5:44 am

Hi Guys,

Why yes.........I need your help again. Did you get it...."Why yes" or YS. I know.......it's corny....I'm just in a good mood this morning. It's always a good morning when you can get up. Ok I need some help with pricing of used Carter YS 950 carbs. Being new to all this I don't know what the "you got a steal"/"decent price"/"you got ripped off" price points are for said carb. If I'd been involved with jeeps for the past year or so I'd know what you guys know, which 's a normal price and what's a good and bad price........but I don't. So can someone advise me on the current going price for a decent rebuildable YS?

thanks,
bob

I recently paid $100 for a nice, rebuildable core w/a little rust. I have no idea how this price compares to the market.

Pay very close attention to the information offered. $100 for a rebuildable core is just over the top for what I’m willing to pay.

Not all cores are created equal and good ones are scarce.

True enough. And when you start adding in rebuild costs, even DIY, one can soon find they have a very expensive carburetor.

And it is best to not buy one for the sake of it, especially the one's for M-38A1 as the threads for the choke bracket may not exist. I still encounter some I have left from a barrel full of scrap rejects from the support shop at Ft Devens that are a 50/50 chance. I wouldn't dare to get a "going price" a there is no way to know their condition until after a shop gets to work on them.

Ben,

Thru word of mouth a buddy of mine with a motorcycle shop "found" a couple YS carbs for me. How do I tell if the threads for the choke bracket are still intact? Meaning.....where are these threads located? Is there anything else that's prone to make them not good rebuild candidates?

thanks,
bob

The two holes toward the firewall. Make sure they are for the M-38A1, not M-38. On the A1, the mounting stud holes line up with the elbow. The M-38 mounting studs are at right angle to elbow. M-38 throttle body is smaller with corresponding shorter distance between studs, Throttle body and bowls do not interchange.

Hi Ben,

Ok......sorry for being a little dense here......bowl has raised "YS" letters in the casting.....metal tag on it says 950S....and the mounting stud holes line up with the air horn. Pic is of the firewall side of carb.....but I don't see any holes.....just the 4 screws for the diaphragm chamber. The choke cable bracket is attached via two screws to the underside of the air horn, and those screws are tight on both carbs. Are those the holes you mean?

thanks,
bob
