New M38A1 owner. A lot of questions

Post by pvtcook » Tue Jan 31, 2017 5:31 pm

I just bought my first M38A1. It's a 53 model I think. It looks like it's completely original but I'm not positive about that. Thought I would put what info I know On here and see what you think.
Serial number on data plate is 63423 Nov 53
Patent plate has 57148 and 89051
Engine number is MD12880

Based on the rear frame member, looks like you have a USMC jeep. It also seems at least one of your data plates have been changed. The serial numbers should match on both plates. The battery cover (and if you have a hinged grill) helps to date the jeep.

Well I was told if it was Marine it would have lockers in the axles. So I jacked it up and spun the wheel and they turned in opposite directions.
So the patent plate number should match my data plate serial number?
My battery cover is the latch type. Grill is not hinged.
What about the engine number?

Your questions are not all that simple, there are subtle differences, details and body features in the m-38A1s that are not in print that are identifiable by those who have been around long enough to have noticed them. If you are lucky your body and chassis features will be intact. Some features change when the Jeep were repaired by the military.

The Thick Spacer is necessary for the M-38A1 Vacuum-Booster type pump, it will help to turn over the engine until the fuel pump lobe is at its low spot. Use two gaskets, one each side of spacer. Stick the inner gasket to the block with Permatex #3.
