Carb help for a proud new M38a1 owner
I purchased a 19563 M38a1 and brought it home over this past weekend. She is covered in road grime and salt. There will need to be a bath once it warms up a little. I have a carb question. I have a YF carb, and for some reason I am thinking it should be a YS. Besides that, I have to be at half choke to crank, and full choke to keep from killing the motor when engaging 1st gear. It does cranks easy..but after a full night of the jeep sitting in the garage...the whole thing reeked of gas. I think I have some leaks around the carb, but I wanted to get the opinion of some people who know much more than I do. She doesn't drip any fluids on the floor. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. I am attaching some carb pics, and shot of the M38a1 from the side....can't wait to get her on the road!

Re: Carb help for a proud new M38a1 owner
I can't really see your engine in your Jeep but it looks kinda like you have the L-Head engine instead of the F-Head engine. If you have the L-Head / Flathead engine then that carb is correct for that engine but neither are correct for your Jeep.
It depends on what you want to do with your Jeep. If it runs fine the way it is and you can enjoy it I say run it awhile and have fun. In the mean time if you want you can chase the correct engine and carb. Alan

Re: Carb help for a proud new M38a1 owner
It is the F-Head not he flat head motor, but it is not a side draft carb. I am going to rebuild this carb as I believe it is the reason for the fuel smell in the garage. I haven't done anything with a carb in 20 years or so..this could be a disaster in the making. I will probably get a correct side draft carb down the road, but for now.....I'm itching to get her street ready. Thanks for the response. I'm hoping to find some instructions on hoe to rebuild the YF carb.

This is an F-head. Unfortunately, the 832SB you show is not correct for the vehicle. It should be a YS 950S, which, while it has a sideways choke opening, is a downdraft carb.

Thanks ScoutPilot. FOr now I will rebuild this carb to get it on the road, then search for the correct one. I have a feeling buying YS 950S will not be cheap.

Really?!?! You better check to make sure that the crankcase, tranny, and transfer case have oil in them. They could be empty.USMC9399 wrote:....She doesn't drip any fluids on the floor.....

Yeah I'd check that out. Every good jeep leaks a little bit of oil here and there!
