Engine smoking

Post by Shug4 » Sun Oct 23, 2016 6:00 am

I have a F134 engine that was burning oil in the last two cylinders. I took the head off and put new oil seals on the valve stems. I rebuilt the carb but had to put my old needle seat and Springs back in because it wouldn't run right. I notice that when I am at an idle no smoke comes out the muffler but when I gun it it smokes. The smoke is a light gray color not blue. What would cause this.

If you've had the head off recently (and you have), then it sounds like there's a water leak into one or more of the cylinders, which will give a white-gray smoke, especially during high revs. Did you torque the head in the correct order and to spec?

It could be plain old condensation which at this time of year is to be expected but when the engine is fully warmed up, there shouldn't be any.

Try running the engine with the radiator cap loose. If the smoke has gone, it's a head leak. Better to pressure-test each cylinder before contemplating taking the head off again........

I torqued the head down in proper sequence. I am wondering get if there might be water or some oil in the muffler causing this. Will check it out better when I get home.

Water or oil in muffler only takes less than minutes to clear once it is up to temp.
