mil. standard jr. oil filter canister lid stamped or not

Post by g.keating » Sat Sep 10, 2016 11:15 am

Following another topic over on the willys military jeep forum discussing the filter that may fit this canister, I found something that I would like clarification on. I have a 1954 M170 with what i believe is the standard military Jr. canister.

The top of my filter does not have any identifiing numbers, or lettering stating its a standard military jr. canister. f

My question is, did all military standard jr. filter canisters have
that stamped on its top, or some part number? Were later canisters unmarked?

What do you have on your M38A1 or M170?

If your Jeep did not leave the plant in 52/53 with a Cuno, it will have a Fram Military Junior. The 1954 M-170's I have witnessed and serviced all had the Fram Military Junior.
According to factory information, the M-170's were not equipped with anything but the Military Junior.

Perhaps the answer is in on the Willys factory Drawing for Part 119986. According to the Factory Parts lists the M-170 only used the Military Standard Fram Oil Filter. Those who have serviced WWII and Korean era MV's are familiar with Military Junior/Senior Covers stamped as such. How yours ended up unmarked can be left up to imagination. There is nothing in any ORD 9's or Willys Factory Parts lists that hint of unstamped Military Junior Covers. I have had crated 1968 Dated Military Engines with Fram Military Juniors that are stamped. One can think Civilian Jeep, but any CJ's having Military Juniors would be marked as such.
A lot can happen to Jeeps once in civilian use.

I believe you have a Fram civilian oil canister, top and bottom.

No I have a filter canister that is the same size as the military standard. The civilian fram is smaller

Swap it out for a "Military Standard" stamped Fram cover and your troubles are over.

For what its worth, as no one else has responded, but as proof of such covers:

The pictures below are of WeeBee webbing's M170, which is regarded as one of the best examples of the jeep model. His filter cover has no markings

Two out of nearly 90,000 M-38A1's. Not much to go on. Need a handful more.

And I am going out and check a couple Fram Military Standard Filters, just for you. So far oil filter history points to this particular filter being military only.

I have an NOS FRAM Cover just like yours, nothing, plain. It does have a Fram Decal on it with a MS- Number that is scuffed with the numbers partly obliterated. It was part of the spares for one of those Dodge 230 powered USAF Coleman Tugs of the late 50's early 60's. Have an NOS GI Surplus Fram with Decal on side that ID's it as "Fram Junior Filter". Nothing on raised outer perimeter of cover, and it has no drain Plug.
I doubt that there are enough persons with matching Weebie and Ben's unmarked Junior Oil Filters to give you a good answer.

I appreciate the effort. I think there's more to this but I'm content enough that mine isn't the only one, and it will stay with the jeep.

There are a lot of like MV parts that are identical but with different stock numbers. I always suspected it was a trick just to get the military to buy more unneeded parts that they already stock. A prime example is the Korean War Era Pioneer Tool Rack for the M-35 6X6. The same identical bracket has several Ord Numbers for the same Part as the years from the 50's thru 90's rolled by.
