50's M38A1 Military Police markings

Post by MASH_4077 » Sun Jun 26, 2016 6:44 am

Later today I'm going to pick up a 54 M38A1 that I have to do some work on. One of the things the customer wants is the jeep done with military Police markings. I've been looking online and all that seems to come up are MB/GPW's, M38's, and, M151's. I've found very few M38A1's and some of them are restorations that don't look correct. I have found a few 38A1's that have the MP markings, but it's just the front bumper or the side of the jeep. Does anyone have any vintage pictures?

The 716 MP's at Ft Dix had M-38A1 that had the space between the hinge line and lower windshield grommet painted gloss white with black MILITARY POLICE spread out in block letters about 30" across.
The 50's TV Shoe starring Phil Silvers "You'll Never Get Rich" started each episode with an M-38A1 MP Jeep driving down the road. It had the MP Sign on the lower windshield.

Do a web search MP JEEP, go to Page 2 "more images". You'll have more MP M-38A1's than you can shake a stick at.

TB746-93-1 dated October 1964 say this:-

M38A1 Truck. (Front).
A detachable white sign, three and a half inches high and fifty-nine and a quarter inches long, with the words "Military Police" in three inch high black letters, will be mounted on the windshield panel below the glass. The sign will be locally fabricated from sixteen-gauge sheet metal or thicker and will be attached to the panel with sheet metal screws.

M38A1 Truck. (Rear).
A white disc, sixteen inches in diameter with the words "Military Police" in three-inch black letters located around the circumference of the disc, a half-inch from the disc edge, will be attached to the centre of the spare wheel on the rear of the vehicle. The sign will be locally fabricated from sixteen-gauge sheet metal or thicker. The disc will be attached by means of a bracket made from strap iron, one inch wide and one-eighth of an inch thick.

I sent you some vintage photos that were from my neighbor. You can see there is some variation on how the markings were done in the field. The photos were taken in Korea.

Painted onto windshield M-38A1 makes better sense, who in their right mind would want to drill holes into the M38A1 Windshield frame thru two thicknesses of windshield sheetmetal , you're talking 3 1/2" to 4" with a board or metal MP sign.

Joel, I believe my M38A1 has holes drilled in the windshield frame and I believe the jeep I'm going to mark has them as well. I'll try and get some pics of them tomorrow.
