M38A1 and T98A

Post by Don X » Sat Apr 23, 2016 9:53 am

I've heard a few M38A1s came out with the T98A transmission but I've never seen one. They're found more often, but not that often, in early CJ5s. I'm installing one in my A1 but have run into a problem. It's a much larger tranny. It's higher and longer. The length is easier to adapt but I'm finding the case is too high so it hits the bottom of the floor of my Jeep. I've trimmed a little but because of the size of the fuel tank. I can't trim enough to accommodate the transmission.

I've looked at doing a body lift for additional clearance but I'm hoping there's an easier solution. I also thought briefly about trying to move the engine forward but it doesn't look like I would gain much more room.

Is there anyone out there with an A1 that has a T98 in it? I'm hoping to find someone with an original factory install AND someone that has done a conversion. Here are a few pictures of what I have to work with. Thanks.

T-98 Equipped 1950's-60's CJ-5's had a different configuration Transmission cross member, also the transmission covers were raised in order to accommodate the T-98. Only way you are going to figure out the involved parts is to consult Jeep Factory Parts Book, or check some of the CJ websites. M-38A1's were not manufactured with T-98.

Thanks. I'm aware of the additional parts and I have everything but the tranny tunnel which is difficult to locate. I'm planning on fabricating one if I don't source an original one.

I thought I heard a very few Marine issue M38A1s have been found with the T98A transmission. That may be some misinformation but I've heard it twice. If that's the case, hopefully there is someone here that has transplanted one. The only issue I have is because of the gas tank.

Over the years I've heard of several similar stories.
I've never seem any hard evidence that it was true.
I can tell you however that after Kaiser bought Jeep in 54 they did develop a 'kit' for dealers to install 4 speeds in Jeeps that did not come with them from the factory. That's how some early CJ5's and CJ3B ended up with them before they were released to CJ5. The kits did not come with the necessary sheetmetal.

I may have seen the T-98 set up in a Telephone company CJ-5 equipped with the "Jeep a Trench".
