Emergency brake

Post by Michael Keller » Sun Apr 10, 2016 6:26 am

I note that the emergency brake on my 1955 M38A1 has a lever on the brake that wants to be pulled forward to engage the brake. The hand brake has a vertical lever that wants to move up and down, not forward and back.

What's up with this? Am I missing some hardware? Do I have a bubba mod on the emergency brake?

Over at Willys M Jeeps http://www.willsymjeeps.com you can access parts, maintenance and technical manuals for your jeep (as well as other military vehicles). The parts manual has an exploded view of the handbrake mechanism. The M38A1 has a vertical pull arm which actuates the brake. The M38 has a horizontal brake arm connected via a cable to a pull out handle in the dash panel. I'm guessing you have a transmission that came from a M38 or CJ in your M38A1. The parts diagram you are looking for is on Page 107: http://willysmjeeps.com/downloads/TM%20 ... 20M170.pdf
