M-38A1 BRUISES EASY

Post by Joe Gopan » Mon Mar 21, 2016 4:51 pm

Ever notice the dings on the fronts of M-38A1 fenders, they are prone to damage from being driven thru brush which is part of Army Jeep life. Ever notice the big dents in the middle of M-38A1 Jeep hoods that result from being driven while unlatched? You will only do that trick once. It is more fun when it has just been done by your near sighted Commo Officer.

Yeah, both of my fenders are dented, and the passenger seat has cracked the windshield too.

What type Latch does the Passenger Seat have, Factory, MWO, (Hardware Store Door Bolt)?

Pretty sure mine has this! And yes both of my fenders are banged up on the fronts, one may even have a crack.

The later M-38A1 had a factory designed spring loaded device consisting of a flat spring bolted to the rh inside of the body tub. This was installed somewhere around 1954 and later. The MWO sliding bolt could be found either gas or arc welded to the floor. There were some crappy welds.
The fender damage? The Army had Bondo, too, and many times the rips and tears were just welded and spot painted.

Some of you may have 1954 or later M-38A1 Jeeps that for some reason are missing the WO-684184 retaining spring for the Front Passenger Seat but do have the bracket that it bolts to. The Bracket does have a part number, WO-684185 but is welded to the side of the body. It is doubtful that they are stocked anywhere. This feature applies to M-38A1 Serial 61809 and up.
