I'm having trouble installing the emergency brake on my 1953 M38A1. I can get it all together but the tit on the handle gets in the way when I try to engage the brake.
First question: Does the tit go inside the drum or is it outside. I've tried both but neither one will work. If on the outside, the tit rubs against the drum before the brake engages.
If on the inside, the brake is always engaged.
Second question: Is ther anything wrong with solving my problem by grinding the tit off. I can't see any function for the tit.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by the "tit". But if you are having problems with assembly, perhaps a gander at the TM will help. If you don't have a copy, go to the Willys M Jeeps site (http://www.willysmjeeps.com) and in the "Downloads" section you will find parts, maintenance and operation manuals and a whole host of other technical information. The handbrake section is in TM9-8015-2, page 209. http://www.pedros.cz/M38A1/TM9-8015-2.pdf

Best to post a pic of your problem, you may have it assembled incorrectly. If the parts are correct, it will go together as designed.

George,
I know what you are talking about, because I had the same problem. Ultimately, I ground the tit off and everything worked fine. I would love to know if there is a better solution.

I ended up grinding the "tit" off and installing. It works fine.
