engine type/model

Post by tnspd » Thu Nov 26, 2015 8:21 am

I have 4 cylinder engine in my M38A1. Where do I look on it for markings to determine what engine model I have. I need to try and get some gaskets and seals to fix a few class two leaks on it right now.

Look on the passengers side of the block. There should be some numbers there. Also look where the water pump bolts to the block. And the there is a small pad in front of the head. There maybe some numbers there.

I finally got around to looking on the block and found the engine number of MD25540. Anyone know when that engine may have been made? Could this engine possibly be the original engine? My M38A1 serial number is 23151 built in 10/52.

That could be the original engine. I learned a few years ago that Williys would supply engines for other purposes such as generators. They would have a batch of engines in supply and there was no attempt to match engines to body serial numbers. They just grabbed the next engines and used them on the M38A1 line.

Willys did not do like Ford did in WWII and stamp the engine to match the GPW on the line.

Only alternate Military use of "F" Head Jeep Engines that comes to mind was in the Hawk Missile Loader.

Thanks for the info. The engine runs really well. I need to fix a couple of leaks and I think the front main seal is leaking but it runs really good!
