Rear bumperet question

Post by Buzzerdbait » Wed Nov 11, 2015 2:52 pm

I have installed my bumperets on my M38-A1 but now i dont know if i have done it right. which way do they mount? i have installed them with the point pointing down, i have seen period photo's that go either way. I think i have my lifting brackets wrong also.

On the WWII era Willys MB and GPW jeeps the bumperettes were mounted with the points up, on the later M-series jeeps the points are mounted downwards. The lifting brackets are supposed to be in the outer set of holes. Go to http://www.willysmjeeps.com site and register - there you will find in the "Downloads" section all the maintenance, operation and parts manuals for your jeep - a wealth of information that will help you answer these types of questions. I thought bumperettes were turned upside down just because tail gate were introduced.

So basically, is up to you how would you like to install it.

The position of the bumperette is related to the angle of departure.

Looks like you have an M151A2 setup at your pintle hook. The lifting brackets on the 38 series also served as trailer chain receivers.

With the shackles under the bumperettes you really do not need the 151a2 chain loops.

Your option and certainly no criticism from me - just an observation.

I'm restoring a 53 model at this time as well.

And do not forget the MWO to remove the M-100 Safety Chains. There were no provisions on M-38/M-38A1 to attach the safety chains. The shackles are for lifting. The Canadian Army did install a safety chain Bracket on their M-Series Jeeps, it was a shaped threaded steel rod that replaced the lower Pintle Hook attaching bolts.

Do a search here on the M38A1 Technical Knowledge board for Trailer Safety Chains for pics and information.

Canadian Safety Chain device. Simple, but effective and allows the use of the original M-100 Safety Chains.
The factory installed M-100 Trailer Safety Chains are the same as MBT/BT3 and are too short to reach the M-38 and M-38A1 Lifting Shackles.
Some M-100's that stayed around late were reequipped with the longer M-416 chains with the Pelican Hooks for use with M-151 Jeeps

M-151 Safety Chain Bracket is an excellent idea.

I agree - I've also seen the eye bolts that attach the pintle hook to the frame to hook trailer chains in,

The heavier duty M-38/M-38A1 Pintle hook jaw is a bit wider and leaves little room for the eye bolts and leaves no room for the Safety Chain Hooks.

I guess the one given to me that had them was an older model but the eye bolts flared out away from the pintle and worked quite nicely,

The eye Bolts will mount in horizontal position on WWII period jaw, the later prevents this and the eyes only go on vertical leaving little room for hooks.

We just use the longer chains when towing,
