Trailer safety chains

Post by suregrip413 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 7:05 pm

I have a M 170 I bought along with a M100 trailer. The 170 was USAF and was wired for the trailer correctly but their is no place to attach the safety chains. Their are two 3/8 ? Holes above the pintle. Was this for eye bolts like on WWII jeeps?
Thanks

There was no factory provision for attaching safety chains to the M-38/M-38a1 pintle hooks, the Canadians did have an issue safety chain bracket. An easy solution is to install the M-151 Safety Chain Plate which requires no mods.
There are a couple posts showing the Canadian safety chain kit, member ECVJeeps from Canada has the bracket on his M-38CDN.
I have the Canadian Army issue bracket on my M-38A1 and will post a pic tonite.

Canadian Army Issue safety chain hitch. It was packaged with a FSN, and does not show in the Jeep factory parts list for the U.S. issue M-38A1. I did not record the part number. It is crude, but I used it because it is made for the M-38A1 CDN.
There are some other photos of this Canadian safety chain feature on the M-38 of a G503 Canadian contributor, perhaps he has the FSN and ORD numbers for it.

The Canadian safety chain bracket had the Nato Stock Number of 5306-21-107-1284. It would not have had an FSN. The part number for the installation kit or the "Bolt, U, Safety Chain" itself show 35907 as the originator, which is Cdn Army Equipment Engineering Establishment. Canada used the same safety chain bracket on all 4 models of these Jeeps (M38Cdn, M38A1 Cdn, M38A1Cdn2 and M38A1Cdn3) from 1951 until 1971.

If you can't find or fabricate one like that, the M151 trailer chain plate works well and may be easier to find.

Anyone else have the Canadian "U-Bolt" installation for their M-38A1? M-151 is an excellent installation, but it does not have a "Jeep" connection when talking Jeep to fellow collectors.
