I have found little about my willys. And its a israel m38a1. Thats why its not waterproof elektric and a standard motorstarter and altenator and not kickstart and cj5:s battery holder. Mvh Lars

Hej!

You are correct Lars - if your jeep is ex Israeli army then it is basically a CJ5 with a blackout light and other military add-ons. That would explain why your jeep is 12 volt and has a "civvy" starter and other non-M38A1 features.

In contrast, a Dutch army Nekaf jeep is an M38A1 with minor differences such as front fender mounted reflectors ect.

The Chassis does not exhibit CJ-5 features. there are no license plate slots at the left rear, and it has M-38A1 tie down brackets along the sides of the chassis. Check underneath to see if the machine gun bracket is in place. Count the number of spring leaves, and look to see if the remnants of the voltage regulator bracket remain on the RH frame rail under the air cleaner.

Joel, Lars did post a photo showing the front leaf springs in the photo of the grill. Look at the bottom left. Looks like the large stack seen on the M38A1...unless the Israeli CJ5's had M38A1 springs and front lifting shackles added as part of the Israeli specs? I'm only speculating as I don't know anything about them.

1955 and most very early 1956 CJ-5 left the factory with 12 Leaf Front and 13 Leaf rear springs with same part numberas M-38A1, and also had the spring shackles at the rear of the front spring just like the M-38A1.

you have got some work ahead of you but she can shine again.

Don't worry too much about the 12v electrical conversion right now.

For now you can focus on the frame restoration. Electrical later.

I did not see a shot of passenger side. Was there a slave receptacle or is it a CJ tub for sure?

its an easy way to tell between CJ (Civilian) and M (military) series tubs/frames. The slave receptacle is on the passenger side and looks a lot like the fuel/gas cap area on the drivers side. CJ tubs do not have it. It was used to help simplify the process of jumping off dead batteries on other 24v military equipment like tanks and other jeeps. Since there were a lot of 24v vehicles, tanks, trucks, other jeeps - it made it easy for all of them to connect to each other if necessary. Others with more knowledge can explain more in depth but thats the way its been explained to me. Attached is a shot of my A1s slave receptacle.

Good luck with your restoration!
