electrical wiring harness

Post by Bpenkala » Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:15 pm

Hello,

My M38A1 was converted to a 12V system and the main wiring harness is basically an extension cord. I purchased an original main wiring harness intended for the original 24V system. I intend to eventually convert back to 24V system, but until then I would like to install the new wiring harness and connect existing 12V components to keep the jeep street legal to drive around until I have all the parts and time to make the conversion to 24V. My question is whether the 24V harness will handle the existing 12V system and components. My understanding is that 12V systems draw more amperage than 24V systems and I don't want to burn up the new harness (or the vehicle). The main wiring harness would be connected to lights, and gauges mostly. Any knowledge on this topic would be helpful.

Thanks,

Brad

Most M series wiring for lights is about 14 gauge, at worst, 16 gauge. That should be fine for normal 12V lamps. The gauges don't draw too much current, either.
