M38A1 with Full Floating Rear End

Post by Austringer » Sat May 10, 2014 10:58 am

Did M38A1s ever come with a full floating rear end? reason I ask is that I've come across one that looks to be factory that way. I've never seen one without the standard rear.

If it's not a swapped in MB/GPW rear axle, and it is a Dana 44, there were aftermarket full float conversion kits available for the 19 spline Dana 44 axles. I put a seton my '61 CJ-5 after I sheared off a stock 2 piece axle on the highway back in the early '90s. It uses a slightly modified front spindle and stock front hub and bearings with a double splined shaft that you can use with solid drive flanges or locking hubs on the wheel side. You can still buy them from Herm the Overdrive guy. (19 or 30 spline differential)

Check the backing plates for a quick answer and also size the differential housing, the MB used the smaller housing that had the same size cover as on the front. Spicer 44 was a larger differential housing. Count the Ring and pinion teeth, MB was 39:8, MD is 43:8.
