Restoring rusty bolts

I was at my local ACE hardware yesterday asking about what I should use to clean the rust off of some of the bolts (like fenders & windshield). The guy recommended distilled white vinegar.
It sounds like it would work. I'm thinking dunk them in a mason jar with it, let it soak, wipe it off then primer, & paint. Any thoughts?

wardo74, ive tried that approach. for me it did not work that well, because i didnt have weeks to wait. i went to home depot and purchase a product that had phos acid in it and it work very well. i believe it was called prep and etch made by klen strip. i also purchase a small sand blaster and spent many of hours blasting orig bolts and nuts. good luck.

Hello,

I had the same trouble with my bolts and nuts, here is what I deed
I gathered everything, put them in a big bag and took them to a local galvanize work shop ( cold zing galvanize method)

below is what I took back, please note that I gave the bolts as they were with all the rust they had...

Wow,

Those look nice! What did it cost you to have that done? My only fear in doing that is taking them all out of the ziplock bags and mismatching them when I try to put them back on. Great idea though!
