Hi Ben, I need to find me another A1 so I can ride around with the top off. It's about 18 degrees right now in Ohio but I remember as long as the windshield is up it ain't so bad. John

I had daily driver CJ and M-Series Jeeps that I drove in below zero weather from the 50's thru the 90's with canvas tops and was always comfortable. 20 years later, I wonder how I ever stood the cold.

Your M-38A1 Jeep will even let you know the difference between Goodyear NDCC and the other brands by the sound they make - your M-38A1 will talk to you.

I just told a friend of mine that your not really a jeep owner until the doors are off, top is off, windshield is down and you are cruising down the road. THEN you are a Jeep owner!

Your M-38A1 will even sing to you  , some of the GI Issue 60's dated matched belt sets would give off a friendly "chirping" sound at idle.

My M-38A1 said "Hello" after a 6 month hibernation a few days ago. I unplugged the NOKO Genius 24V Smart Charger, Pulled the Choke, turned the switch, stepped on the starter, and had one eager to go M-38A1 in less than ten seconds.
A little spring time Driver PM and it will be ready for another great year.

It's talking, RF wheel is grabbing when brakes are applied. This calls for normal PM, first the Brake Drum will come off, if it is a wheel seal the hub will be removed, the source for the grabbing will be checked for GO or GAA, bearings will be cleaned and repacked, new seal will be installed. If it is GO, the Differential will come out and inner axle seals will be replaced. If the grease on the shoe is just a smudge, it can usually be cleaned. If not, NOS 50's vintage Surplus Shoes will be installed.

Routine PM cured the pull to the right. There was just enough brake shoe dust that built up in rivet holes and other places on backing plate to absorb moisture from the atmosphere and cause the pull. No wheel seal leaks or GO-90 from within the spindles was evident. Air Hose and a wipedown of "Brake Kleen" cured the problem. The other drums were pulled and any dust was removed. My records show that the Bendix Brake Shoes that came on the NOS Front axle have almost 70,000 miles. The secret to longevity is PM and light as a feather Jeep driving habits.
GI style PM as suggested in your TM capped off by Windex on the glass is a good rule. Have never had an MV that I maintained quit on me.

One of the noticeable differences in operating the M-38A1 compared to MB and MC is that extra kick in the butt the M-38A1 has when traveling at 35-40 MPH and give the accelerator pedal a goose.

M-38A1 hood rattle at idle caused by hood hinge wear is normal on the M-38A1, it varies between Jeeps and if one listens carefully each Jeep has its' own signature idle.
