ENGINE SOUND FOR M38A1

Post by JMZ421 » Fri Aug 10, 2012 5:16 pm

My last M38A1 had that "characteristic" whine of a military vehicle when starting and taking off. I'm sure you know what I am talking about. My new A1 does not seem to have that smooth revving sound. I do need a new muffler, old and rusted, and I know the inside is all rusted out. Could it be that all I need is that new muffler? and/or the whole system? It's currently not loud or anything so this is why I have not rushed to change anything BUT the muffler is shot inside. Thank you for your time. John

If all is right at 35MPH, you will hear the steady drone of the engine, hum of the tires and slight whine of the transfer case.. A bad muffler, worn engine and sometimes the exhaust reverberating off the RH Bumperette or lifting shackle will add a bit. Other than the slight whine there should be no gearbox noise. M-38A1 is actually quieter than earlier Jeeps as tye fan is barely audible to the driver.

Ben, I will start with the muffler. Do you know if the advertised mufflers for around $60 are pretty much the same as NOS? Thank you. John

Sounds too cheap, some of the dealers are advertising quality replacements, Avoid Omix Brand. OEM are few and far between, Be sure to ask for the gaskets.

Mine was yelling at me the last time I took it out. I thought the engine was going out. Turns out the hand brake was partially engaged.

CAUTION:
Pulling up the M-38A1 hand brake handle at too high a speed can flip the Jeep.

And a little M-38A1 small talk for Wednesday afternoon.
I worked on M-38A1 Jeeps in the Army and liked them so much I have not been without one for over 50 years. And you can throw throw in a new 50's-60's CJ-5 or two. My CJ-5's had Koenig winches and they came in handy at times where winching thru 100' of muck saved a mile or two of walking.

I've been working on mine today. Needed to do a bit of maintenance on it. Repacking wheel bearings and greased the front end. It's been a few years since I've done the wheel bearings. I grease the front end once every other month. Probably due for an oil change as well. I've put almost 2,000 miles on my jeep since December. It's been a very good summer!

What's nice about the M-38A1 is that when it is well tuned it will always have sufficient acceleration to give you a noticible kick in the seat no matter the speed. Those 12 extra horsepower do make a difference.

exhaust reverberating off the RH Bumperette or lifting shackle.
Mine had been doing that since I finished the M38A1. Just the other week to get ready to go to a encampment I added my exhaust tip on to the end of the muffler pipe. It did make a big difference to the exhaust sound. I would not have thought it.
