M38a1 - Generator performance

Postby 1000Fuss » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:00 pm

The generator (Autolite 24V) of my M38a1 is making problems.

After a couple of short distance rides the battery is to weak to deliver enough power to start the engine.

I performed the spark check with one of the spark plugs. The spark is blue as expected.

The question is if the brushes of generator are to weak so it does not produce sufficient energy to refill the batteries after all those engine starts.

Do you face this problem as well? Could it be something else than the cleaning the generator and changing the brushes?

Btw, both batteries are brand new.

Cheers, Bodo

Had the same problem with my M38A1. I rebuilt the generator and adjusted the voltage regulator. Your problem may be with the regulator. Go to www.willysmjeeps.com and in the "Downloads" section you will find information and manuals to help you diagnose and repair your electrical system.
