THEM M-38/M-38A1 CLARY FLANGES

Post by Joe Gopan » Sun Jan 08, 2012 5:06 pm

ORDNANCE STOCK NO. G-740-8327042 times two will get you a set of two. They are simple to install and require the reuse of your old WO-800798 Hub Cap. There are two types pictured, the larger Clary Flange is for the M-37. Note the A-868 Drive Flange that you will have to remove. This particular one is from one of the last new 4 CYL CJ-5 Jeeps we sold, the drive flanges were removed to install Warn Hubs. The small ring next to the hubcap is a spacer to be used when installing the flanges on the MB/GPW. The ends of the Outer Axle Shafts rest inside shielded ball bearings, the flanges are cast aluminum.

CLARY FLANGES were manufactured under Gov't Contract DA-04-200-ORD-448 by the CAM TOOL CO. Oakland CA. What is unique is tht the M-38/M-38A1 Flanges and the M-37 Flanges I have were manufactured under the same contract and were both packaged during 11/55.
ORD PART NO FOR M-38/M-38A1 is G-740-8327042
ORD PART NO. FOR THE M-37/WC is G-741-8327043

If you do install a set of these critters, be sure to pack your original drive flanges in your Jeep Storage compartment. I can't think of a better use for these GI Issue flanges than to take them along on the ALCAN trip, they might make a bit of difference due to the great distance traveled.
Note the Script "F" on the NOS O.D. Hub Cap, these were plentiful back 30 or so years ago when the wholesalers had a "Glut" of them.

These "non-driving" flanges will not eliminate the need to service steering knuckle upper and lower bearings.

I don't use these GI Issue hubs, but I like to collect them. Will buy them or trade Jeep parts for them. I have never seen them installed on any active Army M-37 or M-38 type trucks.

Ben, am I to understand that you have these non-driving flanges for sale? I really need a set for my M38A1. I carried three WWII vets in the Fourth of July parade. I rode the clutch, in-and-out, in-and-out for its entire length. I would have preferred to have driven in 4WLo, but didn't want to harm my front diff. I really need a set of these flanges (or similar) for future parades.

NICE JEEP!
Mine are keepers, having all the regulation accessories is part of the enjoyment.
Be glad you do not own an MB, they are geared higher than M-38A1 and require much more clutching.

You can grind or mill the splines out of a stock set of flanges if you want a stock look as opposed to current or past CJ type un-locking hubs in talked about in the other post. I ran a set of hubs with the splines removed in my old WC-1 1/2t Dodge. A disadvantage to them and the Clary flanges is that you need to swap the stock ones back on if you plan on off-roading.

Someone sold the Army on the idea and they bought a bunch to stock for use on administrative MB, M-38 and M-38A1 Jeeps.

I just discovered that my recently acquired MB has two of these installed. I discovered this when I started to swap them out for dualmatic selectro hubs. I sure am glad I haven't taken it out 4 wheeling yet. It would've been a huge disappointment.

Can someone give me an idea of value, so that if I put them up for trade here on the Gee, I will have an idea of what I could trade them for? They are being pulled from a fully functional jeep.

Thanks, Doug

$100.00 minimum for good used. There is an actual Technical Bulletin (TB-ORD 570, Aug 54) on the installation and use of these flanges on the 1/4 Ton Truck. They are an authentic MB/GPW M-38, M-38A1 accessory, that was designed for the military.
Send a PM to Cabin Fever who was looking for a set on his parade M-38A1 Jeep.

Thanks for the info. These will be making their way to the WTT section once I get a bit more organized.

I am seeking information on M38A1's configured for MP use from 1953-?.

I am also interested in equipment and uniforms worn and carried by MP's during this timeframe.

You may want to give Midwest Military a call at 952-440-8778, I have bought these GI Flanges from John. The Army bought them for MB thru M-38A1 and 3/4 Ton WC thru M-37.
