Hello Zoli,

There are several good photos on the other two web sites. It will be based on opinions which we all have since there are no black and white published methods that have ever been posted anywhere.

Joel, your description several posts back of the vinyl lettering sounds like what the jeep has: very neatly done- nothing backyard about it. Same with the stars, which are at all the usual locations on hood, fenders, back quarter. There are also many (re?)-stenciled areas, especially near the gas tank filler. The stenciling under the hood is all original, as the paint there is factory.

There is some white numbering on the front bumper. Hopefully the holes drilled for the tow bar did not destroy too much, but there is an 8 2 starting at the far left end of the bumper.

Also, delivery date (from brass dash plate) was 2-54. When I pick up the jeep, i'll get the WO plate number.

There were several methods of refueling rate, the M-38a1 was based on 17 Gallons per minute.
MAXIMUM REFUELING RATE
17 GALLONS PER MIN.
MAXIMUM REFUELING RATE
17 G.P.M.
MAXIMUM FUEL ACCEPT
17 G.P.M.
TP-25
MAX SPEED 35 M.P.H. (on lower inside windshield)
The USA Reg was originally factory stenciled in 2" font with the lower row resting on the top of the snorkle cut out.
All of the informational stenciling was in 1" font. There were several decals, the most familiar being the Battery Disconnect decal on the pass fender by the snorkle opening, the Yellow Valve Adjusting Stencil on the Rocker Arm Cover and the Bell Housing Drain Plug Decal jusy over the top of the instrument mounting plate.

Actually Cuz, there are some "black and white" published methods, the lengths of some straps, the Axe Strap included, are listed in Group 18-08 ORD9 SNL-G758 SEPT 1955, PAGES 339-341 and the ORD 8 lists a strap or two.

I think you underestimate the mental capacity of the rest of the folks on this board. We certainly are aware of the strap listings in the ORD 9. What you have done here is taken a little of everyone's time to play your childish "stump the chump" game you enjoy so much in that dark room in front of that bright green screen! And as usual you didn't even address the issue of the lay of the straps or method of applying that I referred to in my post. I didn't address the parts list numbers or lengths and my illustrations offer no length information.

hey red I think your question has already been answered but on my 55 a1 the jeep was the 50s od and then painted the vietnam darker green color, when they did that they fixed damage on the rear right corner and used a vinal star. All other stensals were painted on. I could kick myself I got the jeep when I was 16(always wanted one since I was little)and being a dumb kid repainted it green with a brush but now 17 years later I am doing a proper full restoration and am almost finished. Welcome. Chris

I have one more pic depicting the ball tip end of the Axe Strap, and mmethod of securing the Axe, will post it later on.
Note the original 1" cotton webbing used for the straps and the correct buckles that Willys used. The Seat Cushions are original Willys Factory OD Vinylite as installed during M-38A1 production.

This is the positioning of the handle end of the regulation 36" GI Issue 4# Axe. There were no shorter 4# Axes for the US Army, all 4# Axes had 36" Handles. The "Special M-38A1 Axe" is a myth, to shorten a 4# Axe would only serve to reduce it's efficiency. The Army supplied lighter weight Hatchets for that requirement.

Note the late style Front Bow Stowage Bracket.

A big thank you is due for Ben and Cuz for the pictures of the straps. It is easier now to see the mismatch of those straps on my jeep.
Thank You Guys,
Zoli

My pics are from my own M-38A1 and the origin of the straps are from genuine US Army Surplus Packaging or Willys inventory from the 50's-late 60's. No. Repros.
