62 m38a1 top bow bracket

Post by dcartledge » Tue Oct 26, 2010 4:05 pm

has no captive nut for the thumbscrew.

How does the top bow stay in?

And is this correct for this jeep - 62 marine corps contract.

All M-38A1 after late 1954 had the hook type front bow storage bracket, it works just fine. All M-38A1 after Serial 83545 had the late brackets. I like them better, no Thumbscrew to catch your trousers or bang a hip on.
I used to buy them from Jeep to update the early M-38A1 to this better bracket.

Can you post a photo of these brackets and top bows?

I don't see how the top bow would stay in the side bracket when set up to hold the canvas. There's nothing in there.

The weight of the canvas holds the bows in place, even with out the canvas the bows will not bounce out of the sockets, there is no need for thumbscrews. The later M-38a1 Body Tubs eliminated the hole in the sides for thumbscrews. As for the late front storage brackets they are an improvement and work just fine while eliminating the chance of losing the thumbscrew. Am sure it you do not trust the two front brackets, that someone will be willing to trade the older thumb screw type.

I do not have either the front or rear stowage brackets. All I have are the brackets which would hold the top bows in place for the canvas.

I also do not have the top bows so I'm trying to get a feel for what I need to obtain and still be correct for this year model,

Midwest Military has repro'd the storage brackets, not sure if he has the later type front ones. I thought you posted a pic showing the brackets?

I did post a photo with top bow brackets. But the only ones there are the two pie shaped ones that hold the top up.

What I need are the other brackets.

Photos would help out - thank you,

Wes - Third picture, is the forward most bracket closest to the passenger seat correct?
I am seeking information on M38A1's configured for MP use from 1953-?.

I am also interested in equipment and uniforms worn and carried by MP's during this timeframe.

The Late front bracket in the lower (Green) photo is on backwards, all of the front and rear storage brackets depicted in the three photos are attached with incorrect screws, they should be the 673600 type, 1/4" screw with washer. The Thumb Screws in the top photo are also incorrect.

Good eye Joel. I didn't post the other late photo because I wanted to see if anyone would catch the bracket being backwards. No worries though, I sent Dave the correct photo several days ago.

Just ask Dave which photo I sent him. The only reason I even cut out the green jeep photo above was because Dave wanted a closer view of the bracket. I believe you said earlier you have several on your shelf. Why not spend a little time taking and posting a photo of one of your NOS ones to help the guy out?
