Installing new clutch in M38A1
Customer bring his 1955 M38A1 into the shop Monday for a clutch. He brought his manual to be yesterday and it said to pull the engine to install the clutch. Is this necessary?

No.
The drive train on these rigs (if stock) are set up in a way that enables you pull the whole drive train out in one swoop, that includes the radiator. This way there was no dealing with having to drain anything. Then a whole new or rebuilt drive train could be quickly dropped in.
You may find its easier to removed the floor panels and just work on dropping the tranny and t-case. That's what I do but some rather still just pull the whole drive train, I don't have a engine hoist. As you probably know, support the back of the engine if you end up just pulling the gear boxes and pull them as one unit together, don't separate them.

Thanks Bretto, thought it would be easier to just drop the tranny but didn't know if their was something that would keep me from doing it that way. Will pull trans and transfer case together. Thanks again.Bretto wrote:No.

It's a matter of personal choice. I usually just remove the engine rather than manhandle the entire powerplant when changing the M-38A1 clutch, it's less work
