Any info on this soldier

This is a picture of a family member - I think in the pacific. We know very little about his service during WWII and after other than he became a major.
Can you tell anything by the picture? What division he was with? where it might have been taken? what he did? what rank he was?

Note the P-38 on the sign. Do some Web Searches for WWII 5th Air Force Units.

Is that an officer's or an enlisted man's belt buckle?
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?

Officers and EM wore the same brass belt buckle.

Probably in the Phillipines, 1st Cav Div. and P38's operated there.

So which used the open buckle you can see in various pics? I'm confused by this (I'm all too easily confused sometimes :D ).

he was a 1943 west point grad so i assume an officer

You wouldn't want to scratch up your shiny brass belt buckle would you? Open buckles were phosphate coated.
