The original caption read, "They couldn't park it in the hanger, because the snow was up against the door".

Shown here is an engine heater, used for warming the engines on very cold days. The aircraft is a Curtiss C-46, The men are also wearing gas masks for chemical warfare training.

Dow did not always have winter flight operations until the last couple years of the war. That is Hangar 1 where I park every day. That hangar was home to just about every aircraft that would fit in it during WWII, post war , the 14th Fighter Group used it for their T-6, F-84B, F-47, C-47 and B-25, next the Iowa/Nebraska Air Guard used it for their T-6, F-51D, C-47 and B-25 during their 50-52 call to active duty. I have fond memories of the F-51's and the men who serviced them in that hangar The 506th SFW with the F-84G was next.
Our burger joint and automobile business office had non stop hangar flying during the 40's-50's. There were 5 hangars at one time. One had an F-80 ejection seat go off inside it in 52. Dow had an ASR Station at Winter Harbor during the 40's-50's, it was good duty.
I plan to restore one of those Stewart Warner WWII Engine Heaters. Two of our mechanics and many civilian friends worked at Dow during the war.

Thanks for the memories, I appreciate it.

Could have been but not on that day.
About a month after VE-Day Col Jimmy Stewart landed at Dow leading a formation of 100 returning B-24's and B-17's that were being returned from Europe.

Spent a few quiet moments sipping a Tim Hortons coffee by Dow Field Hangar #1 tonite reflecting back in time. The weather was similar to that of the ETO Snowbound B-17 pictured by Hangar #1 in the photo from 70 years ago. It is 50 years almost to the day the C-47 I was a passenger in was taxiing by the same Dow field Hangar #1, the last active B-47 I saw was parked just feet away and it was snowing. Times have changed since these two events, the U.S. had all but rid the threat of the axis powers when the B-17 was parked here and SAC kept the Soviets on notice not to mess with us during the period the B-47 was visiting.

Anyone looking for a WWII Engine Heater like the one in Gerrykan's WWII photo?
Hangar #1 current photo, I forgot, will get some soon. Was just out there the other day getting some aircraft hydraulic oil for M-1 Bomblift #2.
Can't tell you how much I appreciate the WWII Dow Field photos Gerrykan posted.
I can hear the bombers warming up at dawn just as plain as I did back when the war was still going on.
