Hi Wes,
With all you’re doing for our Jeeps you should have more responses, you’re right. Here is a delayed one from the Greek M38. I bought it in the 70’s with a cylinder head that had the valve cover on it, I guess from an M38A1. When I overhauled the engine I kept the block and installed a correct head. I do hope my block IS original M38, hope you can confirm this !

1-What is your engine’s serial number? RMC 58680
2-Engine Casting number (right lower side of block)(include all the letters) 641087-L-W-12-A-N1-CR-N2
3-Is there a oval serial space on the upper right front side behind oil filter? NO
4-Does the rear flange of the block have 4 or 10 bolt holes in the block flange? (Do not count the holes below the block in the steel plate.) Has 4
5-Does the right side of the block have 4 or 2 expansion plugs (freeze plugs)? Has 2
6-Is your timing mark on the flywheel or front crank pulley? Its on the camshaft cover.
7-What are the numbers or letter found on the left lower rear side of the block by the oil pressure port? 11 12 C
8-Are there any rebuild tags fastened to your block? If so describe them. NO
9-What is the model and serial of the jeep the engine came in if known? N/A
10-If WWII what is the build date on the bottom under the rear main cap? N/A
Also the tranny cross-member has TWO bolts and the Clutch is BOLTED
Let me know if you want more info.

Howdy Wes,

My first post! Just picked up an M38 rolling chassis on Friday and this is what I found. I would appreciate any info on this motor, it was not what I expected to find but it runs. Would like to find an M38 motor if anyone out there has one?

1-What is your engine’s serial number? MB 49736
2-Engine Casting number (right lower side of block)(include all the letters) 10-16 638632 W3 A NI-CR-N_
3-Is there a oval serial space on the upper right front side behind oil filter? YES
4-Does the rear flange of the block have 4 or 10 bolt holes in the block flange? (Do not count the holes below the block in the steel plate.) It has 4.
5-Does the right side of the block have 4 or 2 expansion plugs (freeze plugs)? 4 freeze plugs.
6-Is your timing mark on the flywheel or front crank pulley? Flywheel.
7-What are the numbers or letter found on the left lower rear side of the block by the oil pressure port? Could not find anything?
8-Are there any rebuild tags fastened to your block? If so describe them. No.
9-What is the model and serial of the jeep the engine came in if known? M38 Rolling chassis, year and S/N unknown.
10-If WWII what is the build date on the bottom under the rear main cap? Not sure where this is but with a little help I could find it (maybe!).

Airdale,

Your motor is from a MB. To find the machining date (item 10) you'll need to remove the oil pan. If there are truly only five digits in your serial number then this number should be 10-xx-41. If there is a sixth digit after the MB 49736 then the machining date should be 10-xx-44

The MyPicGallery.com web site folded up a few months ago. I had used it for a few years to store photos.

I have some info photos at our M series Willys jeeps site:

Just starting to learn about L134s, but with 2-20 641087-L-W3-A-N1-CR-N2, when does this motor date from? It's got the water port on the back side of the head, so I'm assuming it's an M38 engine.

Thanks!

The clue to M-38 Head is the threaded hole at the front face of the head fot the bypass. M-38 and late CJ-3A thru DJ-3A head without the threaded bypass have the same part number cast onto the head.

My M38 is serial number 47607 dated 12-51

Engine serial number is on oval behind oil filter 317779

casting number 10-14 638632-W4A N1 - CR2

The rear flange has 4 holes

RH of block has 4 plugs

Timing mark on fywheel (I think)

Number 4 by oil pressure port

No rebuild tags

The engine mounts have been modified to fit the chassis. What is it from ???

Sorry, Had you emailed your info to me as I directed above I would have answered you sooner.

That's a WWII style block with both mount ears facing aft on it's front plate. There should have been a prefix lightly stamped just ahead of the serial number. Swapping front mount plates can be just as difficult as doing what the PO did by extending the left chassis mount aft to mate with the early plate. Only problem is this makes it very tough to install the correct dual fuel/vacuum pump that goes there for the M38.
