MBP-4301UT Starter

Post by Cannon Cocker » Mon Jan 15, 2018 12:54 pm

I'm attempting to remove pivot for the housing. I've removed the switch housing, plunger w/spring and the pivot lock screw. According to the manual, I should be able to pull the yoke lever and pivot from the housing. Not budging. Am I missing something? Internals looks pretty rusty from what I can see. Prepared to use heat and other means but wanted to run it by you all beforehand. Thanks in advance.

I think you are right. All I can see is the set screw that is in this hole that retains the shaft.

I am like you, you might need soak the shaft in penetrating oil and heat, cool and repeat until you can get it out.

On the later starter it was clear there was that screw and the angled piece of metal that retains it.

It is more than likely rusted on to the yoke.Use penetrating oil on the shaft where it goes through the yoke. You need to work the yoke loose from the shaft.I would not use heat as you could damage the yoke and you will never find another.

Finally got the starter disassembled. Looks like I'm going to need a clutch for it. Who supplies? Thanks-

I've already tried them. No joy for a MBP-4301UT clutch. Thank you for suggesting. I may have located a donor starter. Hopefully it'll checkout.

The donor turned out to be the wrong starter. Still looking for a clutch with little success. Another question - Does anyone know the purpose of the inner spring of the pinion shaft assembly? I think the outer spring, much larger, is a return spring but for the life of me I don't see what the purpose of the inner spring. I suspect it actuates something but what?

I think you lucked out.Look on ebay for M38 Clutch assy.G740.NOS the part number is also for the early starter.Initially I thought it was the clutch disk in unopened package until I looked and saw fingers holding it.
