Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
I'll ask them but if I take my frame and rubber to them, they will know what size to make the glass. After all, that is what they do for a living, and there is an old guy there who actually knew what Everseal was last time I was there. And he had some of it too.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
M-38's with two piece glass was a common sight on Army Bases, my guess was that they salvaged a scrap chunk of weatherseal to make the center portion.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
my m38 had a two piece windshield when I found it. The metal cover plates covering a piece of regular windshield rubber and locking strip were very well made and formed to fit the rubber. Looked as if made by aftermarket or as a willys kit as it was made so well.

I don't doubt that; I just didn't know where the two piece glass thing came from. I need to know how to fit a One pice glass.

If you were on a 50'-60's US Army, Marines too, base and had sharp eyes, M-38's with this repair could be seen occasionaly. I don't like it tho, it takes some getting used to.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
Well that's a new one for me. And what an incredible waste of time when a new one piece of glass could be installed. We would never do that now as a "repair" method but back then they repaired all kinds of things that we now replace. Our support maintenance personnel have far more important things to do than making glass.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
Keep in mind that TB came out when we had very serious shortages of materials and then when it was revised it was just after the Korean War and military downsizing was at full bore again. Funds were hard to come by. The military still see's these crunch periods and during them this what they do.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
Yes, I am well aware of, and up until recently, was involved in, Army funding levels and cycles. But time is money and we would not repair a windshield now; our soldier's and civilian's time is worth too much. Back then, they repaired lots of things that are not cost effective to do now. We do detailed analysis of each potentially repairable item to determine how much to spend on it before disposal. Glass is not even on the table. So to speak.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
My reply was not an argument to continue the practice. It was simply a presentation of the document to explain why it was done in the 40's and 50's and let restorers of these 40 & 50's units know the real reason for the presence of many M38's with 2 pc windshields. We can learn a lot from history if we study it and learn to understand the motivation behind it during that period.
This statement does not make any attempt to learn the "WHY" of the situation in the 50's. The restorers of old vehicles try to learn the reasons for why things were done a half century ago. I am sure the same Army bean counters did all the assessments today's Army bean counters do before issuing that TB.And what an incredible waste of time when a new one piece of glass could be installed.

Re: Teach Me How to Install Glass
Sure; makes sense; We have to take the times and maintenance philosophy of the period into consideration when doing research and restos.
