Fuel filter tube

Post by JMZ421 » Tue May 09, 2017 12:51 pm

My 1951 M38 has all the orignal fording lines hooked up. I want to make sure the fuel pick-up tube VENT located on the pick-up tube is working properly. The gas cap is the original unvented type. Any ideas on how to check that vent for proper operation. An old post I stated about unvented gas tank issues causing idle and stalling conditions when warms up a condition I have. I just want to correct(rule out) as as I await my new fuel filter arrival. I realize I can remove gas cap to see if condition improves, correct? Thanks John

I have no suggestions on how to test it. If your Jeep ran good, it was probably OK. Best to change it now that it is apart. Leaving all that fording valving and junk hooked up is only asking for trouble as it can cause symptoms you may not notice, The Army ordered the fording valves wired open and that the hand primers be deactivated for a reason.
The idea was to get the Jeep to go under water and very few needed that junk which is prone to little leaks just from age and driving.

Found an old post to remove gas cap to see if cures problem, if so change to a "vented" cap or fix that vent. I did not know there were different gas tank caps. Mine is the early one to pressurize the tank, which corresponds to your post. I did blow air thru that fording connection and did feel air by the vent so I will assume it is OK for now. Thank you

It's a tube - unfasten from the air filter end, attach a short length of rubber hose for access - and blow through it. If you can blow easily through the vent tubes, they are venting!
