Electronic Voltage Regulator

Post by dpcd67 » Sun Apr 30, 2017 7:28 pm

Will an electronic voltage regulator fit M38? I read that the ammeter no longer works. I hate electrical things. Best if someone tells me what to do. I now have a Prestolite regulator on my M38, from which all the pins have been removed. So, I guess I need some sort of new regulator and the old types seem to be non existent.
In some research, I found some using a commercial 24 volt one wire alternator; looks a bit civvy but I might cave in in the interim as they are very cheap. I do know I can use a military alternator from an M35A3 but those things are $600 and up so that ain't going to happen.

All you have to do is install a 5 Wire Spider for the #27 Circuit and connect the 5th #27 Wire to the terminal on the Batt/Gen Indicator.#27 powers the instruments. and tape off the two original wires that went to the ammeter.

The GI Issue 24 Volt/25 Amp Solid State Regulator was introduced to the M-Series trucks around the early 60's. They are a lot easier on the batteries due to their precise output.

I have voltmeters in both my 24v M38 and M38A1. I had an ammeter failure in the A1 which let a charging system problem go undiscovered. The M38 has an electronic voltage regulator - got one on Ebay for about $60. Was a little scuffed up but it works just fine.

Thanks; good advice. I had one on an M37 I had 2 years ago, but it was already on it from a Govt rebuild truck and I didn't care how it was wired up. Anyway, I see them selling for $200, but if you see one for less, let me know.
thanks. I saw a 5 wire spider harness for sale somewhere recently.....

Midwest Military has them as does many other parts suppliers.

Don't forget to specify Packard or Douglas for the type connectors on the spider.

Yes on the spider. And yes on the regulators being available but I never pay full retail.maybe as a last resort.
Thanks for the tips.
