Post by Radtech » Tue Jan 10, 2017 12:43 pm

Anyone know what the 4 holes on the top of the M38 grill just ahead of the radiator ,two on each side, are for?

Got a photo? Your holes could have been drilled by a "Bubba".

They are factory on an early 1950 M38.Looks like at one time there may have been a factory plate across the top between the grill and radiator.I have seen them on other M38's and thought someone may know why they were there. They look like they were punched for sheet metal screws.

Maybe they are appendages from CJ-2A/3A Accessories like Chaff Screens, Winter Front, insect Screen, etc.
I have a NOS CJ-3A early Radiator Guard, will take a peek first chance I get.

It may be a cary over from the CJ's that may have had a plate there to keep the radiator from pulling hot air off the engine.

M38 may have shared some of the air deflector stamping with Grills made for bottom mount radiators. on CJ-3A.

I think so too as I have found many pictures on the web of M38's with the same holes.I have found some CJ2A pictured with welt pads fastened there like on the top of the M38A1 windshield bumpers mounted on the hood.

Gotcha now. WO-663521 Right Side,WO-633522 LINER Lift Side, for CJ-2A up to 97740 and CJ-3A, Side Mounted Radiator.
They are the two short 3" or 4" Hood Welting that were used on these CJ's and used 4Ea. 51980 Rivets.

I'll bet my NOS CJ-3A Grill has these two liners installed.
