installing windshield glass

Post by scruffy1 » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:04 am

I am getting ready to reinstall the windshield glass. I'm wondering if there are any cons to turning what was once the "inside" to face forward. I'm thinking I will get much clearer wiper action without all the pits and micro scratches. Thoughts?

I would leave the weathered side out, there will only be one distorted surface to look thru.

I just had a new glass cut,at local glass shop, cost me $90.00, dont really know if thats a good price or not. Mine was cracked. I just use RAIN-X on my jeep windshields, works better than wipers :D

Makes sense to face the pitted side forward. Over time the glass would eventually be pitted on both sides. The Rain-x sounds good as well. I have a friend who swears by the stuff, especially on a vertical windshield. Another question. I fitted the new seal to the frame and trimmed it so the ends fit nice and snug but when I then installed it on the glass the ends overlapped by 1 1/4". I figure that is to allow a little wiggle room for installation and is not unusual. That sound right??

Should I fit the gasket snug around the windshield glass or snug against the frame? Seems like if it is tight to the frame opening it would be much more difficult to pull the rubber over the edge.

Wow. Just got finished installing the glass. 3+ hours of torment. I split the difference in the rubber overlap and ended up making a tool to get the locking strip installed. Installing that long skinny piece of rubber was undoubtedly the hardest part of the whole project. Glad it is done. Never again.

There IS a tool for that locking strip. Seems like everyone tries to install it without the tool and has a heck of a time, the tool makes it pretty simple. Just google windshield locking strip installation tool and you should find several. It is a common proplem posted over on the 3A page as well as posts asking which way the rubber goes in (originally with the strip on the inside according to factory photos, on the 3A) and the occasional post about how it was far easier to write a check to a pro to install the glass.. :D

Yeah. I went on line and found the tool, ordered it, and then found a youtube video on how to install the strip. Being impatient, that's when I decided I could make my own. The homemade tool worked well enough and when the real tool shows up I will keep it for the glass on the hardtop and then donate it to my son's toolbox.

I see and like inside, WHY is everyone else saying outside is the only way they have ever seen it when all the pictures I see are definitely inside?

Educated guesses, maybe. Some are observing and have a long Jeep history.

You will see some on the outside because it is easier to install than the correct way inside. The inserts were installed at the factory on the inside with the windshield folded down. The glass company who cut my M38 windshield and installed it told me the insert always goes on the inside. He said they are easier to put in on the outside but that is not the correct way.
