During my memorial day events and activities I learned of a local WWII vet that was in the marines and on Iwo Jima of many other places. I took my GPW over to see him and took him for a ride, He hasnt been in the military since 1945 after being discharged from the hospital after severe injuries sustained on Iwo jima.
While I was there with my dad, the veterans son was there as well as most of his family, before we left his son told us that he had a 1949 willys jeep in parts out in the edge of the woods.
We went out to look at it, and sure enough it is a M38 jeep, the data plates are missing from it but you can clearly see where they were. It is a completle basket case if there has ever been one. the front wheels are still on it, but the rear axle is laying on the ground. the hood its rusted out and completly worthless, the tub is in awful shape, and the motor has been uncovered and exposed for a while. all the other tires and rims are there with it and at least one of the front fenders are there. the grille is there too.
While looking at it he said its mine if I wanted it.
Ive got quite a few projects as it is, but someone told me once to never turn down something thats free. My problem is that I have no idea where you could find parts for this thing. like body related parts. the windshield is gone and the seats are gone, and the fenders will need to be replaced. and im pretty sure the tub needs to be replaced. and maybe the rear axle if its rusted as bad as I think it may be.
Ill get pics of it when we bring it home.
Is there another place on the motor or frame to look for a identification number?
I realize that they didnt make a military jeep from 45 until 50, so its obviously not a 49.
Thanks,
Corey
