m38 glass replacement
Getting ready to put glass back into windshield, wondering how much it will cost to have done. Anyone done this recently? Thanks

Demographics and type of shop make a difference. You mau want to look for a small independent installer that works out of his house or small shop.

Re: m38 glass replacement
Gpw,
Do you have the glass? If so you can do it yourself. The rubber seal and locking strip is available from many of the MV parts dealers. I have done many over the years. The biggest thing is to make sure the rubber seal is "pushed" "formed" in the corners so you don't cut the seal too short and end up with a gap when the glass pushes the seal into the corners.
Now, there is big debate as to where the locking ring goes on the inside or the outside. All of the M38 jeeps I know which have been untouched for 30-40 years has the locking ring on the outside. I'm sure the "other" side will chime in.......

Re: m38 glass replacement
The locking strip goes on the inside. The glass at the factory was installed with the windshields folded down on the hood. There are many factory photos that show this clearly. Also the figure 106 on page 168 of TM 9-1804B shows it in the rear.
Page 271 of the civvy manual SM1002 says the rear as well.
We all know it is contrary to the industry standard which puts it outside to better handle the wind but these guys just don't fly that fast. If you want it factory correct put the lock beading on the inside. If you want to not worry when you are towing the jeep 75 MPH on the highway with the windshield up then put it on the outside.

Yeah, well, the pictures convinced me. My M38 had the locking strip on the inside, I had wondered about that.

Re: m38 glass replacement
Look at the next discussion where I asked how to install the glass; it was stated all the M38s ever seen had the locking strip on the outside.
Inside is definitely the obvious way. Why would you ever expose a seam to the weather?
Now I am confused. I'm sure it can't be random; there is always an SOP in the assembly process scope of work.
I will just have the glass cut and install it myself.

Trust the manual and new Jeep photos. I've changed more than a few CJ-3A and M-38 Windshields that got kissed by an unlatched hood over the years.

Re: m38 glass replacement
Why are you confused. Did the Uninformed professional folks on the other post offer any rock solid evidence as we did that it belongs on the outside? No! Take it with a grain of salt and acknowledge the uninformed professional folks have not seen many original M38's and has definately not seen an M38 at the factory! Put it on the inside where it belongs.
An unmolested 65 year old jeep could easily have had it's windshield glass changed several times and not leave any tell tale evidence of the change.
The mentioned industry standard carries weight in the 70 + MPH highway vehicles which actually have heavy loads placed on their non foldable windshields.

Re: m38 glass replacement
Because two of the "outside" proponents are ones whom I respect; so when they said they go on the outside, and others said inside, that is why I said I was confused. I am not confused as to where the lock strip goes, only why there are two schools of thought on it. (I would not call either of them Bozos though)
I always thought they went inside; the pictures of originals, and TM shows that, and to me, it is only logical to put it inside away from the rain/ice, mud, etc. I didn't know there was an industry standard; I only have done glass that goes into frames that come apart; I am good at that.

Re: m38 glass replacement
Many glass shops will put it on the outside because it is easiest with the windshield set on a table but that is not the correct way.Go with what the military TM manual says it is.I respect what the military TM shows over any ones words.

Re: m38 glass replacement
My father did and I learned a lot about the M38 from him when I we restored my M38 some years ago.He prefered the GPW.He told me that in 1956 the USAF removed the under water fording system and had the bell housings, flywheels and starters changed on the M38s in service to the late type.He thought it was a waste to change out perfectly good parts and send them to salvage. My dad used to say the Air Force changed out perfectly good parts for no reason to justify the jobs of the Feather Merchants working in the motor pool along side the GIs.
