Basic Question: Mounted Tools L or R?

Post by bikeman » Wed Sep 21, 2011 5:00 pm

OK guys, Basic question here.

Scanning through old photos. M38s appear to have tools mounted to the driver's side in some, and to the passenger side in the other.

So, what gives?

If you are talking about the pioneer tools (shovel/ax etc) then the pictures showing the tool mountings on the right (passenger) side are correct. Those showing otherwise are incorrect or not M38's or M38's with the wrong body.

MB or GPW - tools on the driver's side, M38 or M151 - tools on the passenger side, no tools - M38A1 (shovel is under the hood, axe on the right rear wheel housing) or a M606. If you are looking a old photographs taken by a film camera, they may have been printed with the negative upside down - that would reverse the image and make a strange looking Jeep. Can't do that with a digital camera!

That's a WWII jeep and the driver's side for the tools is correct. Those are rifle scabbards mounted on the two front fenders not tools. Normally only one is used and it is mounted to the inside lower skin of the windshield.

Hi Guys,

I'm Francesco from Italy, I recently bought a M38, it is my first american military vehicle. Before of this, ever owned british ones, so I have to learn a lot.

It was bought and reconditioned by a company that removed all brackets and filled by welding all holes, concealing them very well.
I bought pioneer tools and brackets but I am getting crazy in drilling, I drilled wrong paces and shovel and axe won't go in place.

Also the "pochet" for the axe blade was removed !

Has anyone a drawing with Holes/brackets position ?

Need your help !

thanks, regards,

Ciao,

Francesco

Mr Bike; your bio says you have a 51 M38; what side are the tools on, on it? If they are on the drivers side, then you don't have an M38. Don't trust internet pictures. Might help to get some books like the AAW series, M38, Jeep Jeep Jeep and others. and study them for all the detailed differences among jeeps, of which where are hundreds. I still do that every day. (And Dodge books too).

Mr Francesco, the M38 book will help you as well; there are good pictures of where all the holes go and the axe bracket. You can figure out from there. On my current M38 resto, it had about 100 extra holes in it, 38 in the windshield alone. It was fun welding them up. I made little round buttons in my lathe to fill the holes that were 3/8ths or bigger. Smaller ones I just welded up with a brass backing. (An old Dodge master cylinder piston).

Francesco; use a thick brass piece on the back side of the hole when you are welding; just hold it there wth your left hand. It makes welding up small holes much easier as the weld can only stick to the steel body; and it leaves a flat back side. I use the master cylinder piston because it is made like a thimble and has a build in handle. Using a flat piece will work too; just be careful you don't burn your hand through your glove.

Here's a neat little magnetic tool for hole plug welding. Kind of expensive, but if you have a lot of holes to weld up, might be worth it.
