M38A1 Fording Valves

Post by bbloom » Tue Apr 15, 2008 5:09 pm

OK, this may sound like a stupid question to most but I just need to make sure I put mine back together correctly. The proper operation of the fording valves is so that when you pull the cable, the 2 valves should close, is that correct?

And the Army had a bulletin to safety wire them open, as they would sometimes inadvertantly get out of adjustment and the crankcase would unknowingly be driven around pressurized. The Crankcase Ventilation Shut Off Valves were discontinued at the factory after M-38A Serial number 23359 They were availible in the Kit, Deep Water Fording for later vehicles when required to be prepped for deep water fording.
FYI,
M-38A1, Kit, air intake & exhaust tail pipe 806658 was availible thru Civilian Jeep Dealers in the late 50's

To prevent the wire from sliding from the set screw, you should, after you adjust the cables so both valves open and close properly, bend the wire to make a kinck. The kinck will prevent sliding.

There was more to the fix, M-Series vehicles of that period were also being operated with the cables pulled out for whatever reason, and the solution was to deactivate them by safety wiring them in the open position. The Army at that time period had over 100,000 M-Series vehicles equipped with the fording valves, and there were reports being turned in of the problem, Ordnance Command ordered the fix. Very few of these vehicles were ever driven under water, the fix was a cost effective solution.

This stuff can be a source of hard to detect running symptoms as your Jeep ages, the plumbing goes everywhere.
