I have a few M100 trailers with the original 52 dated tires that still have the protectors on them . I think they look good . I wonder if they were ever used on anything but military vehicles and trailers . Warren Duchesne

They were a prewar civilian device. Shrader made them.

semantics in an M38 forum

Post by lucakiki » Fri Oct 11, 2013 10:01 am

Ben Dover wrote:No biggie, just a matter of semantics like Insulators, "Isolators", Distributors, "Dizzys", Generators," Gennys".
NOT TRUE! Mounting sleeve and stem protectors are two very different ways of calling the item, one of which is the correct one while the other is uncorrect.Although most people KNOW that it is incorrect they still use it because anyway we know what we are talking about.
The two different terms would also imply a different purpose, but it is easy to check the truth.

Conversely Dizzy for distributor, genny for generator, et cetera are exactly the same thing, like shockie for shock absorber and other similar contractions.

The comparison is flawed.

As for the meaning of the term semantics, you might be better off by checking it out. It comes from greek, just for your information, and has the same roots as semaphore. How do you like pearls?

Ron has nice repros, install a set and enjoy the nostalgia of WWII/Korean War vintage Jeep and 1/4 Ton Trailer history.
I have both WWII and repro on my MB, MBT, and M-38A1, they make good conversation pieces as well as new friends.
Something I learned in the Army was to hang the Jeep spare wheel with the Valve Stem (Valve Stem Protector) at either the 10 O'clock or 2 O'clock location on the wheel to satisfy the Motor Sergeants and Motor Officers during inspection. The Army thrives on uniformity.

A set of Valve Stem Protectors also make good "Stocking Stuffers" at Christmas.
Ron Fitzpatrick has 'em, "A-5987 Tire tube valve stem protector @ $3.25 Ea." They are found in the MB Wheel Section and they are quality.

Anyone else finding these valve stem protectors on M-38 or M-100?

I had one on my 1952 m38 when I got it on an original tire stamped 1952 Goodrich tire I believe. I think they're cool just because no one knows what they're for.

Not only were they factory installed on M-38's, early M-38A1's, they were factory on 1951 and 1952 M-100 trailers. Those M-100 trailers are a good source of genuine original manufacture valve stem protectors.

I picked up a few sets on E-Bay. Quality parts, came painted OD. They had plenty listed.

Are you referring to the good looking repros or are they original with the Schrader name stamped into them?

They were good looking reproductions. My M38A1 came with originals, picked these up for spare tires and my M416 trailer.
