Maryland M151A1 Project or Oops I bought Rust

Post by Rustman » Thu Dec 28, 2017 1:07 pm

This was supposed to be an easy project. A little bondo I was told by my friend. But he never crawled under the truck. But I digress... I do know that the engine ran about two years ago but that the carb was all gummed up so my friend sent the carb out for a rebuild. The radiator reportedly leaks. I know the brakes work. The ROPS is only fastened front and center. The rear legs rest on top of the wheel wells and aren't even tacked down. The machine gun pintle located in the passenger's crotch is a nice touch. Along with the 40mm ammo can glove box. Looks like I'll be unbolting a bunch of stuff from this one.

Up next more pictures including the body tag. The data plate is meaningless. It and the title call this a 1958 Willys CJ2A...

Looking underneath sort of took the wind out of my sails. Was hoping to NOT completely dismantle the thing and spend a month of my life cutting and welding... But on a more cheery note I thought some here might appreciate that indeed an M151 WILL fit into a livestock trailer... barely.

Interesting project. I hope Ken will chime in with the dates of manufacture since you included the pics of the Budd tag. It has a mix of A2 stuff added into it including the ROPS and the steering wheel and maybe the column and box. I have seen much worse rust than that on M151's for sure. If you do not already know about replacement panels then go to this link. http://www.g838.org/search.php?search_id=unreadposts. I don't have a whole lot more room than that in my car trailer.

Your main concern should be the main frame rails and the forward most rear cross member, the one the front of the rear a arms bolts to. Has the jeep been cut? I would be ready to invest in a rust repair underbody kit ($400) and pay a visit to Guy, he is in your area.http://www.m151bodypanels.com/

Hello Matt.....

Yes, I can help you here.

1. The BUDD Number indicates a Ford-Built M151A1, built under Contract DA20-113-AMC-07507-(T)-(MYP).
2. The Date-of-Delivery would have been August / September 1967.

That's the straightforward bit. now here's the more difficult bit.
There are two items I noticed on your vehicle which could change some of the detail in (1) and (2) above.
3. On the passenger-side front fender are four tiedown loops (footman loops).
4. The speedometer has a warning decal applied.

Both of these items usually indicate a "special purpose" vehicle....usually an Ambulance conversion (an M718) or a Recoilless Rifle Carrier or Support Vehicle (an M151A1C).

If it had been an M151A1C, it would usually have the rear body panel cut out to allow the Rifle to be accessed. From the photos you've posted, it does not look like the rear has been cut or altered, unless it has had a replacement rear panel piece "stitched in." There would also have been holes near the passenger-side door cut-out area where the side-mounted spare tire would have been.

If it had been an M718, there would have been holes in the body side panels for a passenger-side mounted gas-can holder. There would also be holes along the edges of the rear panel with which to attach the Ambulance rear body extension. Here again, I can't see the traces but they may have been filled or welded up.

I noticed a dash dataplate on your vehicle....can you send me a good clear photo of it so that I can determine whether it is original to your vehicle?

Hope this helps..... a bit.
Kind regards....
Ken

Good eye Ken, if it was an M718 it would have had holes in the rear panel like this one
Image
It should also have holes in the right rear fender for the spare tire mount and holes in the side panel for the bow mounts, also various holes in the rear floor and tool box for litter mounts.

It probably will not have the custom windshield though, that is a one off special there.

Thanks so much everyone. Especially Ken for that wonderful information. Right now the truck is still in the livestock trailer. But tomorrow I might get it out with the help of some youthful enthusiastic friends who are coming by. When I do I'll get a picture of the dash plate. In the meantime here's the plate on the passenger rear fender.

The rear panel indeed has had a plate of heavy gauge steel complete with a bottom angle welded in place. Once I get the gas tank and spare off it should be more apparent. It's one of the cleaner mods done to the vehicle. Apparently the rear had rotted out as well and this was the solution. The pintle bolts do not currently go to the center "frame" rails but only through the rear of the truck. I found in the paperwork, detailed drawings done by a previous owner for that plate. Once I get all the junk out of the back I'll start looking for extra mounting holes, cutouts in the body etc.

No additional pictures yet. MUTT is still in the trailer. But I took a closer look yesterday and there's no indication of the cut outs for an A1C. What was the purpose of the four additional footman's loops on the front right fender? I image searched both the A1C and 718, although I could see the footman's loops clearly I didn't see them in use.

Update. MUTT is out of the trailer and in front of my shed. (Shop isn't set up yet) In between cold or wet weather I was able to begin uncovering some former numbers on the bumper. Also below is the incorrect data plate.

Looks like she was in the Maryland National Guard and before that was in:

??? DIV 10 1/4

I need to get more acetone and continue the slow removal process. That seems to be doing the trick best. I ran out and tried some other chemicals I had around the home, but they either merely cleaned the paint well or simply froze. The acetone was working. So I'll stick with it. Curious to see if anything comes up from the hood. And here's the "58 Willeys" data plate.

That's about it so far. Spent some time yesterday removing Bondo. Some of it was even backed up with hardware cloth.
