Why do folks like Radio's on MUTTS
These 50-60 year old military radio's, IMO take up room, weight and are useless. Just wondering. Peace

On my rt524 in my A2, I took the insides out, then put in a music remote radio so I've music/regular station. It wasn't cheap though.

A lot of people actually use the radios on the HAM bands.

Re: Why do folks like Radio's on MUTTS
I used my MUTT radio setup (RT-524) to talk to others during convoys. Radio sets just have a "cool factor" that other gadgets seem to miss. Its also easy to get licensed to legally use the radios in the proper band.
I since sold my MUTT with the radio set. But, I am still hanging with the "cool factor club" with my 42 GPW with its working radio set.
My GPW has both, a working capstan winch and a working radio set. The radio set gets most of the attention from kids and "normal" people at shows. The winch only gets the attention of the guys who understand its rarity.

Re: Why do folks like Radio's on MUTTS
i installed a working RT524 in my M151 for two reasons. the 6 meter ham band allowed me to use it with other mil vehicles, but more useful to me personally, was the VIC1 system i installed, with a box for driver, passenger and rear seat headsets. given how noisy it is with an M151 running down the road, coupled with my substantial hearing loss, it enabled me to speak with everyone in my jeep, and flip over to the ham band with just a throw of the switch.

The AN/VRC 8, 9, and 10 sets I install in my M-38A1 are reminder of my M-38A1 days and events. They use up little space. All of my restored MV's have a sentimental value about them. It's sort of putting my old uniform and revisiting my youth.

Looking at the M151 in the same perspective... you can rationalize any war time jeep is also old and useless.
They were not all driving Marine generals to the battle field.
There were M151s with soldiers... machine guns or radios... you pick!

Some ... like my MZ-1, were just a 3000# radio system direct from the factory!
Having a radio in a jeep is the ultimate option for some of us!

Re: Why do folks like Radio's on MUTTS
When you think about it the very same thing can be said about the M-151. It certainly does not stack up against any of the modern 4x4's and it is cantankerous and expensive to maintain. It is a historic hobby vehicle. So really what else are you going to do with those empty fenders? The 60-100 lbs' just make the ride smoother.
Keep in mind that those 60 year old radios were recalled back into service during the Gulf war when the Sincgars were found to be totally unreliable. So at 35 years old those radios were brought back into full time use in a war zone. Must be something good about them.

Great conversation discussion. !! With cell phones and Walkie talkies I just never considered a Military Radio Set. I think they are neat, but would rather see a gun on it.

I would rather have a rocket launcher if no radio!
